NHTSA grants Conti petition for inconsequential noncompliance

WASHINGTON—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted the petition of Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C. for a finding of inconsequential noncompliance in the case of certain Continental brand replacement motorcycle tires.

The 1,062 Conti TKC80 tires, size 120/70-19 M/C 60Q, were manufactured between April 8, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2015, Conti told NHTSA.

The tire size designation markings on the sidewalls of those tires do not contain the correct construction code designation symbol from the Tire and Rim Association yearbook, Conti said. They bear the designator “B,” which indicated bias-belted construction, instead of the correct “-” designator, which indicates diagonal (bias) construction.

NHTSA agreed with Conti that the mismarkings have no bearing on the performance and durability of the tires and granted the petition. A finding of inconsequential noncompliance means Conti will not have to recall the tires.
